Our world is a world that is rife with flaws, inequities, and inequalities. Society tries to tell us what is right and what is wrong, who is better than others, and who deserves more. This has left many people scrambling for their rights that have evaded their grasp for years. From the women’s suffrage movement, to the civil rights movement, we have seen no shortage of people amalgamating to fight for the rights they have been entitled to, but thoroughly denied.
We see activism within our youth as well, even here at school. The Lychee Video Club is a prime example of people coming together to fight for the rights of the disadvantaged. Its founder, who wishes to be referred to as Daniel May, says he was moved to action by the debates over COVID-19 vaccines. Before that, however, he was the only member since 2019 when it started as a film club, showing the depth of his commitment.
The club has focused on activism, studying, and discussion since it started to gain traction. Daniel May has put a considerable amount of effort into the makeup and goals of his club, saying that it intentionally has no leadership system, so that everyone feels valued and that their opinions are important, and in that same vein new members are decided upon by existing members, to further stress their importance.
One of those members, Odin Brechlin, testifies to the easygoing nature of the club. He says that the small pool of members and the connections everyone has creates a fun atmosphere that contrasts with the serious topics the group sometimes covers, saying that he and Daniel May have known each other for years, helping him feel more comfortable in the group.
Like many others, Brechlin joined because he was concerned with the political state of Beloit, and wanted to do something about it. The club has been a great outlet for him and others to practice activism and learn more about politics and political resources, and presents exciting opportunities for both existing and prospective members.
