Tennis is a sport that boasts a host of strong female figures. From the likes of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, women have been making strides in this sport.
With the rise of national female figures paving the way comes the rise of young women striving to walk the same path. Candiss Edwards, a senior at BMHS, is one of those young women.
Edwards has been a tennis player at BMHS for 3 years, and hopes to continue her career in the future. Her family has always been sports oriented, she says, and has been the wind beneath her wings throughout her tennis career.
Sports is an activity that pushes you to your physical and mental limits, and tennis is no exception when it comes to helping Edwards understand herself on a more spiritual level. Tennis, she says, helped her better understand her personality, her strengths and weaknesses not only as an athlete, but as a leader and team player as well.
Because of the introspection she's been able to do while on the tennis team, she's learned lessons that have helped her exponentially outside of school and her sport. Learning to address her frustration in a healthy, constructive, and discreet way is one of the skills she's picked up from tennis.
Playing tennis is an easy way to find yourself in a pool of frustration, Edwards says, and she has had to learn how to control it in the heat of the moment. Edwards revels in winning, but she has also had to teach herself that winning does not always equate to success. She has had to learn that growth, and joy, and fun are what matters most when playing a sport.
These are valuable lessons all athletes should know, and thankfully, Edwards got the chance to learn them before these precious things were too far out of reach.
