Masks are a divisive topic the United States has faced over the course of the pandemic, and mask mandates have sparked questions over the role of the government in bodily autonomy.
Students have had mixed feelings on the mask mandate the district has implemented in response to a return to in-person learning whilst in the midst of a pandemic. Many believe it’s for the greater good, while others see it as an infringement on their personal freedoms.
“I do not believe that it would be smart to remove the mask mandate because it is very likely a lot of students will just not wear the mask, mostly because it is an inconvenience” said junior, Cameron Schaller, “that would be disrespectful to the people who need others to wear their masks, maybe because of family members, weakened immunity, etc. Ultimately I believe it needs to be in place otherwise there would be a surplus of cases.”
Other students worry about the spread of Covid-19 due to the substantial size of our student body, totaling to around 1,600. With more than twenty students enclosed in a tiny classroom, practicing proper social distancing is often unattainable.
“As annoying as masks are, they are essential in preventing the spread of Covid-19. Our student body is too large for social distance in every class period.” a student said.
As the Covid-19 pandemic nears it’s second anniversary of emergence, people have conflicted views on why masks are still mandated. Especially as various vaccines have been distributed to the public.
“Obviously it is for everyone’s safety but I would prefer not wearing one since I don’t have to wear one at work and I’m fully vaccinated and have not gotten sick.” Junior, Jazzlyn Pulido said.
Despite having a mandate in schools, students and staff often fail at properly wearing and enforcing mask usage. People can be seen with masks under the nose or at the neck, which unfortunately adds little benefit as we try to stay safe and healthy.
“Yes, everyone wears masks pretty diligently -at least in my classes - and teachers usually say something if they see someone with their mask pulled down.” Junior PJ Wilson adds.
Although masks have been a subject of controversy over the past year or so, a majority of students acknowledge the key part they play in keeping others safe. However, as we continuously fail to see any end to this pandemic, working together is crucial to regaining some sense of normalcy.
