When did you start playing guitar? Are there other instruments you know how to play?
I probably started when I was around 10 years old. I also have played a little bit of percussion in Wind Ensemble, but guitar is my main instrument.
Which artist has been the most influential in your music career?
George Benson has been the most influential and is a musical inspiration. He is an R&B/Jazz guitarist and knows how to funk.
How do you prepare or practice to perform your best at concerts/competitions?
Practice 24/7. I practice the song over and over again up until I have to perform. People don’t know that a six-minute song performance will take three to five hours of practice a day for weeks. It’s not just practicing though—you also have to build confidence on stage.
How has being part of the Jazz Band impacted your musical skills?
It’s been a guide through my musical journey, and I want to give big thanks to Mr. Behrens because he sculpted the player that I am today.
Do you always enjoy playing the guitar, or has there been a moment you wanted to give up and stop playing?
I have been there more than a couple of times. I stopped playing for a while because it’s easy to lose track of your goals. You need to set yourself a direction when practicing any instrument.
Do you plan on pursuing a career in music after high school?
I plan to make it a main part of my life in the future, but as a career goes, I’m not sure. For now I’m just trying to get out and play.
What's your favorite song to play? Why?
I don’t really have a favorite song, but there are a bunch of cool songs I like to play. One of them is “Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix. He doesn’t miss.
How do you feel about the Jazz Band going to Essentially Ellington this year?
It feels like everything is coming full circle after 2020. I’m really hyped to get the chance to attend this festival once more. I know everyone in the jazz band is feeling the same way as me.
